Facebook User ID’s to Double in Storage Space
October 19, 2007
Facebook announced today that in the near future, various identification numbers throughout the social network (namely user ID’s) will be updated from 32-bit integers to become 64-bit integers. The change comes with the expectation that the Facebook Platform will grow quickly in the upcoming years.
The announcement of the change is intended to provide third party developers the opportunity to update application code in order to prepare for the change. Specifically, MySQL database columns representing Facebook user ID’s will need to be updated from type INT to type BIGINT.
Although an exact date has not been set, the change is expected to take place in early November.
